Welcome to the EDI Committee
Promoting Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion in the NHLA
Our Mission:
The EDI Committee of the New Hampshire Library Association promotes thoughtful interactions and a sense of belonging with a focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion, and designs professional development opportunities for library staff on issues surrounding these topics.
Our goal is to support staff and the Sections and Committees of NHLA as they work to understand EDI concepts; provide access to training, discussion and resources; and encourage staff to foster environments at their own libraries that are welcoming, relevant, and accessible to all stakeholders.
Topics may include:
- the physical accessibility of libraries for everyone
- technology that is responsive to different needs and abilities
- collections, programs, and services that are reflective of diverse cultures and identities
- recognition of our own singular perspectives and the unique perspectives of others
- the recruitment, hiring, and retention of diverse staff
- policies that are reflective of the above values
Our purpose and our work will be reviewed annually.
June 2024
De-Biasing with James McKim
November 14, 2024 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am (online)
Are you aware that 100% of people are biased but most do not know it? Research has shown that it is this unconscious implicit bias that causes discrimination and the "isms" that exist in society. This highly interactive workshop will help you de-bias yourself and show you how to embrace diverse people and ideas.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, you will be able to
- Understand why we are biased
- Understand the different types of biases
- Know how to use techniques to de-bias yourself
There is no charge to attend and no limits to the number of registrants but registrants must be members of NHLA***
***Please note: In light of the popularity of this topic, we have suspended the attendee requirement of needing a paid NHLA membership. This event is now open to members and non-members. If you find value in this type of presentation, we would love for you to consider paying the small fee and joining NHLA to support our collective work. - the EDI Committee
